Breville Barista Express Review: Café-Quality Espresso at Home

The Barista Express is the gateway drug of home espresso. It’s been the best-selling machine in its class for years, and after three weeks with it, I understand why.

Setup and learning curve

Out of the box you’ll pull sour or bitter shots until you learn to dial in. Give it a weekend. The included tamper, dose trimmer, and pressure gauge make the journey faster than you’d expect.

Espresso quality

Once dialed in, the shots rival what I get from specialty cafés. Rich crema, balanced sweetness, and consistent temperatures shot after shot.

Milk steaming

The steam wand is powerful but takes practice. Two weeks in, I was pouring latte art I’d previously only achieved on $2,000 machines.

Verdict

If you want a real espresso hobby without spending four figures, this is the machine. If you want a button that makes coffee, buy a super-automatic instead.

What we liked

  • Built-in conical burr grinder saves counter space
  • Pulls rich, café-quality shots once dialed in
  • Powerful steam wand with great microfoam
  • Durable all-metal construction

What could be better

  • Steep learning curve for true beginners
  • Single boiler — no simultaneous brew and steam
  • Grinder steps are large, limiting fine tuning

Is the Barista Express good for beginners?
It has a learning curve, but the built-in grinder and pressure gauge compress the journey. Give it a weekend and you'll be pulling drinkable shots.
Can it make lattes and cappuccinos?
Yes. The steam wand produces café-quality microfoam once you learn the technique — latte art is achievable within a couple of weeks.
How long does it take to heat up?
About 30 seconds to brewing temperature. Steaming takes another minute or two because of the single boiler.
